Arraial do Cabo: 24th - 27th February 2026
24th February – Tuesday
That was long and hard work, and I am not sure what energy I am currently running on, but running I am. The Uber turned up early and what a weird guy he was, so weird that I checked his credentials, he had passed all the ‘nice guy’ certifications, so I relaxed and tried not to fall asleep.
I got tp the airport far too early but I am glad I did as it was easier to stay awake there than on that awful sofa bed. Eventually we were called through to gate 3, but after that I was at a total loss and could not understand any of the tannoy announcements. And to top it all off from the moment I put on my trousers my gut started playing up, all I wanted to do was fart – lol – and it was churning – obviously I drank far too much beer over the last few days.
Luckily, in the departure lounge, after 2 false toilet visits, I found myself sitting next to a lovely young lady who was not only on the same flight as me but also had the same boarding number. So I sat tight feeling very pleased with myself and told her I would follow her, She was so delighted to help and, not only did we jump the queue, she walked with me outside and into the plane, where we departed company. All she had was smiles, some people are just so lovely – I hope I am one of those people.
I couldn’t sleep on the plane, my stomach kept churning and I was sitting between two people so felt very paranoid about the fact that all I wanted to do was fart – lol. It was hard work holding everything in place and I was over the moon when the pilot announced that we were arriving 20 minutes early – thank you Mr Pilot for thinking of me! I will not begin to tell you what I did in the luggage hall toilets, but believe me it was such a relief.
I got an Uber from Rio International Airport to the bus station and, even after drinking coffee and eating a sandwich, I had had over 3 hours to wait for my bus. It was so hard, I could feel myself falling into trance like states and then sleep. There was a very chatty couple sitting behind me in the waiting area where I was sitting, on several occasions I asked them to keep an eye on my bags just so I could walk and keep awake.
I had hoped to sleep on the bus, but I was so restless, to the point that I think I annoyed the lady next to me, but such is life. The bus from Rio to here, Arraial do Cabo, took 3 hours and 45 minutes but it felt so much longer. I walked the 14 minutes form the arrival bus station to my apartment where Marcia, the owner, had also just arrived, Don’t you just love it when plans and timings all coordinate perfectly.
The apartment is fine, it is a little tatty and could do with a make over and deep clean, but this seems to be the norm in Brazil. Anyway I am very happy with it, especially as the bed, although very soft, is a proper bed, After Marcia left I went to the supermarket and bought enough provisions to cook dinner and make breakfast. I was going to sleep after that, but once again sleep was not my friend and I ended up going to the beach.
WoW, it is a beautiful beach and it is more like desert sand dunes than a typical beach. it is very hard to walk on and I was sad to have to take off my new sandals, but I did and completed the walk, sinking into the sand, to the sea. Why I did not take a towel, or wear my costume. Is beyond me, perhaps I was too tired to think? Anyway it was lovely just sitting there watching the waves and, one of my favs, people watching, it was actually really quite busy and it wasn’t long before I was chatting with the Ar gentian couple sitting next to me, They were so lovely, especially her, we chatted for ages about all sorts of stuff as we drank caipirinhas and watched th world and three very hunky life guards go by – lol.
I have now cooked and eaten and am actually really looking forward to getting into that soft bed and, fingers crossed, getting a good nights sleep – I certainly deserve one!
25th February – Wednesday
Didn’t get up to much today, it was an admin kind of day. I spent the morning preening and the afternoon doing laundry. Usually I get a service wash but today I found a DIY laundry, it wasn’t any cheaper but kept me busy. After that I went for a little walk to Dive Point and booked myself a dive for tomorrow morning. Most of the dive schools here have not so good reviews but this one had very good reviews. It was a 20 minute walk to the other side of Cabo, so it was nice to see some of the residential part of the town. Although where I am staying is very residential but the hotels are only a minutes walk away. Anyway, I am
very excited about tomorrow especially as it will be my first dive with contact lenses. I am looking forward to seeing what I have missed on my other dives.
26th February – Thursday
Oh WoW. What am awesome day, truly magical. Last night, Pedro, my dive instructor, told me to go to pier two, which I did but they wouldn’t let me on it and I had to wait by pier three. So I messaged him and he came and collected me. There were a couple of other professional divers on board our boat, as well as a photographer called Kiki, a family with 2 boys, a lone man, a French woman doing her certificate and the captain, who is the owner of Dive Point. Luckily Pedro and Kiki could speak English but no one else could, which was cool, but I know they all chatted about me quite a bit when we first left the shore as I kept hearing the word Portuguese word for English – lol.
It took about 30 minutes to get to the dive base, during that time Pedro gave me all the instructions and safety talk needed. I have heard it all before but it was invaluable hearing it again as it has been at least 2 years since I last dived. Pedro took the French girl out first for the first of her two dives and I donned on a wet suit and splashed around in the water. It was quite difficult at first as the suit keeps you buoyant which is a weird sensation and I kept getting water in my mouth so it was quite a relief when Kiki called me up and started to get me ready for my dive. However, it too early, so I jumped back in the sea and this time felt a lot more confident. I put on the goggles and was delighted to see some fish swimming below me, including a few rather big ones. However I did not have a breathing tube and wasn’t able to hold my breath for long under water – the sad effects of smoking and vaping for over 40 years of my life.
It wasn’t long before it really was time to get the rest of the dive gear on and jump into the water. That took me ages, I was very nervous by then as, although I had the breathing mechanism in my mouth I was concerned about going under the water. Anyway, I had no choice and I had to do it and take the big step off the boat and into the drink I went. After bobbing back up to the surface I lay on my back while Pedro gave me another little chat before rolling me over so that I was face down. After checking I was ok we went deeper and deeper. I was doing it all wrong to begin with and using my hands and feet to swim when in fact all I had to do was lay still and let Pedro do all the work for me. This is different from the dives I have done before, where I was free to swim around, and very strange as I could not feel that he had hold of me but he did the whole time. Not being able to feel his grip actually made me panic on several occasions and loose my balance but he kept putting his hand out for me hold so I felt secure again.
The dive was fantastic, the corals were absolutely amazing, so colourful, reds, yellows, pinks, greens, and formed small mountain like structures where the fish swam in and around. There were a lot of sea urchins which made me nervous as I know first hand what it is like to have their spikes imbedded in you, and some times we were so near the corals and mountains that I felt I was going to scrape against them. The fish were amazing, some really huge beautifully vibrant colourful ones, we also saw a couple of extremely big string rays and then much to my delight two sea turtles, the first was relatively small but the second was really big and it swam up from the floor and straight past me, such an amazing experience. We only dived down to 5 meters as my left ear kept blocking and the bubbles from the breathing equipment kept going in it, so I was finding it difficult to equalise, but to be honest 5 meters was fine by me, I saw so many beautiful fish and sea life that I was more than satisfied with the whole experience.
Yesterday, and today, prior to the dive, Pedro had been trying to get me to sign up for the certificate but by the time we had finished I think he was relieved that I hadn’t. I told him that I want to do a couple more fun dives to build up my confidence first, and he agreed that that was the right move for me. Even though I have dived before I have never really been able to see much, and this time, with contact lenses in, I could see everything and it was like diving for the first time. As much as it is so beautiful it is an alien world and seeing it properly for the first time was an out of this world experience. I cannot explain how much I am now looking forward to doing it again, and I will definitely be getting my Padi certificate at some point in the near future.
I so cannot wait to see the photos and videos that Kiki took of my dive. It has been the best day ever.
27th February – Friday
Last night I booked myself onto an open bar boat trip around the islands, I checked the weather first and it did say thunder storms for today, so I booked on a hope. I woke this morning and it was raining, the trip was cancelled, I got a refund, and it proceeded to rain until about 3 O’clock this afternoon. I spent the morning researching accommodation in Rio, found something for a decent price, booked it on one online platform only for the booking to be rejected so I tried another, it took my payment but it was pending. Earlier this evening it got cancelled. Talk about piss me off. By now all the affordable places in the area I wanted were gone, so I have had to settle on something that is yards from Copacabana beach, I know, it’s tough but such is life – lol. I actually wanted a place between Copacabana and Ipanema beach, so I’m not really that far from my ideal location. And I am a stones throw from the beach, it’s a modern apartment so should be nice. I also just checked my finances and considering I had budgeted for £2000 a month and am about £4000 under budget I could have actually booked something a lot more expensive, but £50 a night is more than enough and it will be amazing to go home with enough money to buy a van without having to touch my other savings.
There was a small window of dry weather early in the afternoon so I went to the store and bought a bottle of red wine, OMG, it was so sweet, I still have half of it left. I then spent some time on my website. I am so not pleased with myself, I missed two diary entries when I was in Manaus, so had to do them from memory. And I think I am going to have similar issues for the period when I was with Manu. It is so hard to keep up with my normal routine when I have company. Anyway I am about 6 weeks behind on my website so really need to focus on getting it up to date asap.
Late this afternoon, once the rain had stopped, I went for a last walk along the beach front. It was so windy, the waves were amazing. So strong and high and frantic, but it didn’t stop some people from splashing about in them. In fact I was quite surprised to see so many on the beach considering all of the rain we have had in the last 24 hours. Some people really are hard core beach dwellers, but not me. I found a restaurant with tables outside and had a beer. On my way back to the apartment I went and bought another beer, which I am just finishing now, and booked my Rio accommodation.
Tonight is my last night in Cabo, and I am happy to be moving on to Rio. Rio is actually my last stop in Brazil, and as much as I love it here I am very much looking forward to Argentina and being in a Spanish speaking country again. It really has nothing to do with Brazil as a country, I absolutely love it here, it is just the language barrier. I have spent well over a year learning Spanish now, so being back in the Spanish speaking world will be a lot easier communication wise. Not that that would stop me from moving to Brazil, however, if I did I would focus heavily on learning Portuguese. It really does make such a difference if you can at least understand some of what is being said even if you have problems being understood.
