Bucaramanga: 8th - 10th December 2025
8th December – Monday
I’m exhausted, 4 nights in a single been next to a noisy kitchen and laundry room followed by an 8 hour coach journey has knocked me. As beautiful as that hotel was I had the worst room going and have paid for it in more ways than one. The room I am in now has no windows but at least it is quiet and I am hoping that being in a big bed will enable me to sleep properly. I so need a good nights sleep.
I missed out last night. All the music that didn’t stop until 4am was due to Dias de las Velitas, which is a Colombian cultural event were they line the streets with lit candles to mark the official start of Christmas. It takes place on the 7th December each year and I did not know about it. I did see some candles on my way back from dinner but thought it was a religious thing, paying respect to loved ones passed. It wasn’t until this morning when one of the staff asked if I enjoyed the evening and the candles that I found out about it. No I didn’t and I’m very pissed about it. But such is life.
The coach journey to Bucaramanga was long. About half way a pregnant woman got on and had the seat next to me. She wasn’t overly big so I wasn’t too uncomfortable but I really could have done without her company. I did manage to doze for a lot of journey but we stopped so many times it was a joke. It is a shame that I was so tired as I missed seeing all of the countryside and towns we passed through.
I didn’t realise that Bucaramange is in the mountains, so it is far cooler here which is nice, and we got dropped off at the transport hub for the town. After ordering my Uber I got a message telling me that the pick point was one minute away, so off I went and due to the weight of my rucksack and only having it on one shoulder, I fell up some steps. No one saw me so it wasn’t embarrassing and I didn’t hurt myself but it did add to my negative mood. And to top it off the driver arrived at my original location so I had to go back down the steps, this time I made sure I had my rucksack on properly, so I kept my balance. From what I have seen so far, the town looks really big with lots of high rise buildings, it is the capital of this area which is called Santander.
After dropping my bags off, I went for a walk and got some food and a drink. I am in the city centre and it looks like a very dodgy area, but I did arrive in the dark so hopefully it isn’t. There are also quite a few hotels in this area so I doubt it is dodgy, it just felt like it and I’m also feeling very negative and tired so that hasn’t helped my first impressions.
I need sleep and then tomorrow I will explore – I just hope I am in a happier positive mood.
9th December – Tuesday
This hotel does free coffee in the morning in the smallest cups possible, they are the size of a large shot glass, two slurps and it was gone. I hope they don’t charge for the second cup I desperately needed and had. Once showered and dressed I went to the cafe on the corner opposite and had a decent sized coffee and tamales for breakfast, so delicious, and considering how near and cheap they were they will be seeing me tomorrow and Thursday.
After food I dropped my laundry in at a place around the corner, the woman said to me 7000 but when I later inspected the receipt it is 70,000 – FFS, that’s £13, just over double what I would normally pay. I have a good mind to write her a negative G maps review, let’s see how I am feeling tomorrow. From there I had a walk into the centre. Bucaramange has over 160 parks and I passed through 3 of them on my way. They were not very nice parks, in fact I wouldn’t call them parks, I’d call them squares. I diverted off my route and found myself in an amazing market, it was clean compared to many I have seen but just as busy with amazing fruit and veg stalls, alongside meat and fish stalls. There was one guy rolling, what looked like cheese dough, into balls and deep frying it. I took a photo and I could see from his expression and the tone of his voice when he spoke to his customers that he was not happy. So I showed him the photo and he was happy again as I had not included his face, I also showed it to his customers and they all smiled and one tapped me on the back. Later I took a photo of a guy selling fish, I asked first and he was more than happy and even posed for me – lol.
Bucaramange is a very busy place, almost manic, it was quite overwhelming to begin with and took a little while to settle into the pace of it. I walked down a road that I could have stayed in, it was full of haberdasheries, selling the most amazing materials, sequins and every colour of cotton you could imagine. Obviously the women here love their sewing. I also went down a road that was full of book stalls, new and old, it was fantastic. Finally I found myself at Parque Principal Garcia Rovira de Bucaramange. Which was quite beautiful even though there was very little grass. Around the park is the Church of San Laureano, the city hall and the court house and it has amazingly tall palm trees. I got a coffee and sat there for quite a while before exploring the surrounding streets. I went into the El Libro Total, which is a beautiful white colonial building that houses the TAX office. It is also a cultural centre with a lot of local art on display and I read that they often host cultural events, but there was nothing on today. The courtyard was very beautiful and there were a lot of people just hanging out there, considering it is a TAX office it was great little visit. Not far from there, I went to Museo Casa de Bolivar. Simon Bolivar, a Venezuelan military officer, was known as the liberator and was a key leader in the emancipation of Spanish America from the Spanish Empire. All of the displays were in Spanish, so I didn’t really learn that much but it was still very interesting and the museum had a very beautiful garden.
On my way back I bought a couple of drinks and some nuts in the hope of sitting on the balcony/terrace that the hotels advertises it has. Uhm, it’s a sofa in the corridor! Very disappointing. They do have a room with a balcony and the cleaner asked at reception if I could use that but the manager refused, so I sat in my room and planned and booked my next destination. I am also a little concerned that Medellin and Cali will become fully booked for the Christmas and new year period so thought about booking hostels in those two locations as well. But I didn’t. I’m not sure what dates to tie myself to, I need to think it through a little bit more and chose places with free cancellations just in case I change my mind. You just never know what can happen between now and then.
This evening I took a stroll down the road to a restaurant called El Humero and had the most amazing burger. The meat was cooked to perfection and it was just so juicy and even had ‘proper’ bacon. I have read
somewhere that Bucaramanga is renowned for it’s burgers and now I can see why. The only problem is that since I have been in Colombia all I have seem to have eaten are burgers, pizzas or deep fried food. The overhang of my belly was going down but I think it is going up again. I really must find a healthy place to eat tomorrow.
10th December – Wednesday
I’ve had a bit of a lazy one today. After a late start I went to the cafe on the corner, she didn’t have any arepas so I had the dish of the day; soup followed by chicken with mustard, rice potatoes, beans and salad – I could not eat it all. From there I went to get my laundry but she was closed until 2pm so I found a vape shop and bought some juice before returning to my room.
At about 3:30 I got a phone call from the laundry lady. It was quite funny as I could understand her but she couldn’t understand me. Anyway, I now have expensively clean clothes which I am kinda happy about. I spent most of the afternoon watching a series of videos on a Sainsbury delivery van conversion. Including the van it cost the couple £25,000 and took 8 weeks to do. They had a garage full of tools which made it easy but insisted it could be done with a few standard tools. I am seriously considering doing something like this when I get back to the UK, but expect it will take me several months rather than weeks.
This evening I went for a walk to see the Christmas displays lit up, which was magical, and to get my steps in. As much as I love Colombia it has made me fat again and I was just beginning to loose it in Costa Rica. I’ve consumed too much deep fried food and fizzy drinks. I really do not like the cellulite nor the belly overhang that I have acquired. I am beginning to look like a middle aged Colombian woman – lol. Tomorrow is a new town and a new eating and drinking habit. Fruit, salad and no more fizzy drinks.
